Dosh

In Vedic astrology (Jyotisha), a Dosha refers to a malefic or unfavorable planetary condition in a birth chart (Kundali) that can create challenges, obstacles, or negative effects in a person’s life. Doshas arise due to the placement, conjunction, or aspects of planets in certain signs, houses, or combinations (Yogas)

Types of Major Doshas

Graha Dosha (Planetary Afflictions)
Nakshatra Dosha (Birth Star Afflictions)
Bhav Dosha (House Afflictions)
Yoga Dosha (Planetary Combinations)

Power of Dosh

In Vedic astrology, the strength of a Dosha depends on multiple factors, such as the planet’s placement (exalted, debilitated, or neutral), conjunctions with benefic or malefic planets, aspects, and the overall dignity of the afflicted house. A Dosha can be strong (causing significant challenges) if the malefic planet is in a weak sign, retrograde, or poorly aspected, while it can be weak or even canceled if benefic planets like Jupiter or Mercury aspect or conjunct the afflicted position, or if the native has strong protective yogas (like Gajakesari Yoga or Lakshmi Yoga). Additionally, certain planetary periods (Dasha) can activate or neutralize a Dosha—for example, Saturn’s Sade Sati may bring hardships, but if Jupiter is strong, its effects can be mitigated. Remedies like mantras, gemstones, or charitable acts can further weaken a Dosha’s impact, proving that no astrological affliction is absolute, and cosmic influences can be balanced with awareness and spiritual practice.

उपचार

In Vedic astrology, remedies (Upayas) for Doshas are designed to pacify malefic planetary influences and restore balance through spiritual, astrological, and karmic measures. Common remedies include mantras, wearing gemstones, performing specific pujas and homas (fire rituals), and engaging in charitable acts. Fasting on particular days and pilgrimages to sacred sites can also mitigate negative effects. Additionally, strengthening benefic planets like Jupiter (Guru) through worship or wearing yellow sapphire can counteract Doshas, while adopting ethical living and mindfulness helps neutralize karmic imbalances. Ultimately, remedies work best when combined with self-awareness and sincere devotion, as astrology emphasizes that human effort and divine grace together can transform challenges into opportunities for growth.

Before ordering any puja you need to know the following definitions from your personal horoscope: Gotra, Ishtadevata, Kuladevata (for that you have to know your date, time and location of birth)

Gotra

In Hinduism, gotra refers to a lineage or clan assigned to a person at birth. It traces patrilineal descent to ancient sages (rishis) and is used in determining marriage compatibility (exogamy). Traditionally, marriages within the same gotra are prohibited to avoid genetic similarities.

Each Puja will requres from you to declaier your Gotra, so if you don`t want to go too deep in the topic you can always say that your gotra is Kashyapa. It is general gotra for everyone who doesnt know how to calculate or does`t know date and time of birth.

Here the way how can you know your Gotra if you know your date, time and location of birth:

Go to this web site and follow the instructions. Simply you have to go to nakshatra calculator, entered your birth date, time and location, then to check to which group this naksahtra belongs from the table of the web site, and this group name is your Gotra.

Ishtadevata

An Ishtadevata is a worshipper’s “chosen deity,” a personal or favorite form of the Divine that an individual feels a deep spiritual connection with. This deity becomes the focus of their devotion (bhakti) and meditation. It can be any god or goddess from the Hindu pantheon (e.g., Vishnu, Shiva, Durga, Krishna) based on personal inclination.

To define your Ishtadevata, go to this web site, enter your date, time and location of birth and calculate. It can be 1 or 2 deities.

Kuladevata

A Kuladevata is the ancestral deity or guardian god/goddess of a family, clan (kula), or community. Worship of the kuladevata is passed down generations, often involving rituals at family temples or during special occasions. Examples include local forms of Devi, Ganesha, or other region-specific deities.

Kuladevata is any deity that has been worshipped in your family for at least 3 generations. If you are not a Hindu and do not have such a deity, then in the puja, mention the name of your Ishtadevata.
